Guns

Why aren't guns banned in the USA?

Click here to see why they should be.

A former Prime Minister, Harold Wilson, I think, was once asked why the British police aren't armed. He replied, "Because we don't arm our criminals."

Allowing individuals to own guns does not cut gun crime, in fact, it encourages it. The notion that having a gun will stop one from being shot is pure fantasy.

Totally agree - the cops have guns, to the criminals feel they need to better arm themselves, so the cops get better guns, which makes the criminals get better guns...

It's a viscious circle :(

Sad, but oh so true.

A country still living the dream - or the nightmare... - of the pioneers going west: «Indians» were in the way, so something had to be done to wipe them out of the way (apud Charlton Heston).
Human misery always reveals itself the hardest way...

Well of course our gun-affinity (to the point of including the right in the constitution) began with our founding as a revolutionary country, so that the populace could never be defenseless against a tyrannical government.

Of course in the U.S. today, people would rather have a tyrannical government than actually be bothered to put down the remote control long enough to vote, so this explanation/justification no longer holds.

Still, the theory (with statistics abounding to support either side of this raging controversy) is that if law-abiding citizens are stripped of their right to arm (and protect their homes, selves and loved ones), then the only ones left with guns will be the lawless.

It's not an issue that inspires a rabid passion in me, but I don't support a gun ban.

Incidentally, what do British people hunt with, rocks?

I'm not a gun owner but I do support the Second Amendment. Interpreting it as the line against our government. See PJS's first sentence. That is not to say that I am opposed to restrictive laws. While I will defend someone's right to own a gun, I am not a supporter of them having the right to carry it in public. Or let's say restricting a person's right to own an assault rifle versus a hunting rifle. Quite frankly, disarming the American population can't happen. It simply wouldn't work.
