Republic

If you think the UK should become a republic, please click here and add your name to the petition on the Prime Minister's official web site.

You have to be British to sign.

Also, take a moment to look through some of the other petitions one can sign. A few are quite hilarious! My favourite: Move Parliament to Bradford.

Minge, do YOU think the UK should be a Republic? Why or why not?

Mr Minge has signed the petition - I saw his name and everything :D

I'm in two minds about it though to be honest, and politics was never ever my strong suit :)

I don't even OWN a suit!

I think the UK should become a republic. Why? Democracy. Yes, the Monarch does have real power. Anything the Monarch does or says can indeed be overturned by Parliament (all bar a few exceptions) but the fact that this is at all necessary is plainly wrong.

In simple terms, if your head of state does or says things you don't like, you can elect a new/different one. With a monarchy, you're lumped with what you've got and have no choice in who becomes the next one.

There are a few things the Monarch can do without the consent of Parliament: Prorogue/dissolve Parliament, declare war, choose the Prime Minister... It's all horribly wrong.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind us keeping the Queen, just so long as she pays her own way, her and her entire family pay tax in the same manner as the rest of us and she ceases to be head of state.

But, darling, the glamour! Wouldn't you miss that? The Queen only has power on paper. She wouldn't dare exercise it. Don't you love all the fabulousity of the monarchy?

I think I get Moncrief's point: fascination. But for that purpose don't we have fairy tales?... Besides, who wants a Royal Family that is such a poor example of a family «tout court»?... I wouldn't, even if the Queen were as beautiful as Snow White...
Another side of the matter: what about a Scottish King/Queen?...
(Am I not venemous?...)

Sure, the Queen and all the glamour should continue... Just so long as she's not head of state.

Long live the British Republic!

People magazine here in the U.S. would never forgive you if lot voted for a republic.

Republics are so banal, sweetie. You need jewels and sort of gorgeous skinny young princesses and princes and polo matches and stately closeted homos.

Otherwise you're just that much more American, and who wants that.

You wanna swap, Moncrief?

The Monarchy is so wicked camp. How about a petition to skip Chuck and go straight to William?
